Recent articles from Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reports have been added to selected chapters to update the handbook with information on later outbreaks or incidents of foodborne disease. At the end of selected chapters on pathogenic microorganisms, hypertext links are included to relevant Entrez abstracts and GenBank genetic loci.

The package was created as an initial attempt to solve many of the problems which exist with the delivery and use of modern statistical software. Many times statisticians develop procedures in languages such as Splus, SAS, Minitab, etc.., which are very specific to statisticians. Students and other potential users may not have access to these languages, and therefore may not be able to use the procedures. By using Java and the World Wide Web, StatCrunch should reach the broadest possible audience of any statistical software of its kind. StatCrunch was chosen as the 2005 Classics Award winner for the Statistics discipline for several reasons. StatCrunch allows any student with internet access the ability to have a reasonably full featured statistical analysis program without cost. This means that students who are taking courses through distance education can now have the same software as students on campus. Students who are working on a statistics assignment at home can now have the same software as they would in a lab on campus.

This site contains materials for a college level undergraduate statistics course. The approach places emphasis on practical application. Examples are shown with hand computations and with the Minitab statistical program (V13.1). There are a couple of spreadsheets as well.

The material is divided into chapters and consists of text, tables, equations, and figures, in a hypermedia format. Minitab tutorials and some Excel spreadsheets are linked to the chapters as are homework assignments. The material is designed for use in a classroom with a presentation device. The students typically print the lectures (preferably on a color printer) in advance.
